Outdoor Lighting

You may soon see things in a different light if you request a new outdoor light or if your current lamp needs replacing. That’s because Pioneer Electric will no longer install mercury vapor lights, known for their bluish cast.

The change is spurred on by the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which, among many other energy efficiency standards, makes it illegal to manufacture or import mercury vapor lamp ballasts after Jan. 1, 2008.

Why the need for change?
The Department of Energy estimates that lighting accounts for 25 percent of the nation’s energy usage and as much as 40 percent of a typical commercial building’s energy bill. Except for incandescent bulbs, mercury vapor lamps are the most inefficient source of light.

This section of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 is a practical way of increasing the efficiency of high-intensity discharge lighting systems by phasing out the relatively low efficiency mercury vapor technology.

What’s the difference?
Mercury vapor lamps cast a white light, while high-pressure sodium lamps shed an amber light. High-pressure sodium lamps cover a large area, creating a good range of sight. High-pressure sodium lamps are more energy efficient than mercury vapor lamps, producing more light using less energy. Another added bonus is that high-pressure sodium lamps attract fewer bugs than mercury vapor lamps.

Where do we go from here?
The transition to high-pressure sodium lamps from mercury vapor lamps will be an ongoing effort. Pioneer Electric will continue to install mercury vapor lights until the current inventory is depleted. Once we have used all mercury vapor lamps in stock, high-pressure sodium lamps will be used for all new installations and replacements. There will be no cost to members for these change-outs, but you might notice that the new lamps cast more of a daylight color.
