Youth Tour Finalists Announced
Pioneer Electric Cooperative welcomed 14 high school juniors to participate in Pioneer’s Youth Tour Day on Friday, January 30, 2015. Students representing Central High School, Fort Dale Academy, Georgiana School, Lowndes Academy, McKenzie School, Morgan Academy and Selma High School competed for four coveted spots to attend the Alabama Youth Tour in Montgomery, Ala. this spring.
Throughout the day, students were given the opportunity to participate in activities designed to expand and test their knowledge of electric cooperatives. Various Pioneer Electric employees made presentations throughout the day and Executive Vice President and General Manager Terry Moseley presented a certificate to each student.
“Pioneer is excited at this year’s level of participation in our Youth Tour program,” said PEC Executive Vice President and General Manager Terry Moseley. “This is an impressive group of students and I have no doubt that any of them could represent Pioneer Electric very well in Montgomery. The judges have a tough job in selecting finalists.”
Three outside judges conducted interviews and combined scores from a graded application and a written examination about electric cooperatives to calculate each applicant’s final score. At the end of the day, Harrison Adams of Morgan Academy, Aderick Moore of Selma High School, Beverly (Millie) Motes of Lowndes Academy and Emiley Wells of Fort Dale Academy were selected represent PEC in the 2015 Alabama Youth Tour. Lindsey Gibson of Fort Dale Academy and Janice Jackson of Selma High School were selected as alternates.
“ I am very excited to see these students represent Pioneer Electric at the 2015 Youth Tour,” said Communications Specialist and Youth Tour Director Casey Rogers. “Our finalists also represent various parts of our coverage territory and I am thrilled that Pioneer is once again giving students the opportunity to participate in the program.”
The four finalists will attend the Alabama Youth Tour on March 10-12, 2015 and two finalists will be selected to further represent Pioneer Electric at the National Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. this June. Current Vice President of Membership and former Youth Tour Director Linda Horn is also thrilled that Pioneer is once again sponsoring the program. “The National Youth Tour instills cooperative principles in our future leaders that will benefit cooperatives and aspiring young people, while giving them a glimpse of our government in action,” said Horn.
